PEN America reports nearly 12,000 school book bans across the United States in the 2025-2026 school year, the largest number recorded in a single year. The free-speech group's new figures point to an accelerating wave of censorship in American classrooms, and the report is drawing attention from educators, authors and free-expression advocates discussing the scale of the restrictions.
Why now: The release of PEN America's report documenting a record-high number of book bans is prompting widespread concern about censorship in US schools.
