A quote from critic Leo Bersani, cited in Alan Sinfield's book 'Out on Stage: Lesbian and Gay Theatre in the Twentieth Century', is being shared: the maids' dilemma is that nothing they might do to Madame would not confirm their identity as maids, since transgressiveness is part of that identity. The line refers to Jean Genet's play 'The Maids' and its tangled politics of class, servitude and rebellion.

Why now: The quote's sharp framing of class and identity in Genet's play resonates with ongoing discussions of theatre and queer theory.
