St John's photographer shares defiant 'Not the 51st state' message
Original: untitled St John's, Newfoundland, Canada (Not the 51st state - not now, not ever!) August 2025 https://jamescoughlan.ca
An Ottawa-based photographer captured a scene in St John's, Newfoundland carrying the message 'Not the 51st state - not now, not ever!' in August 2025 and shared it online. The slogan pushes back against recurring suggestions that Canada could become the 51st US state, a idea that has circulated in North American political debate and drawn strong opposition from Canadians who defend their country's sovereignty.
Why now: Ongoing talk about Canada becoming a US state has prompted Canadians to publicly reject the idea and assert national sovereignty.
