New York governor declares state of emergency over measles outbreak
Original: New York governor declares state of emergency after spike in measles cases
New York's governor has declared a statewide disaster emergency following a sharp rise in measles cases, concentrated in communities with low vaccination rates. The declaration allows officials to ban unvaccinated children from public places and steps up vaccination efforts. Health officials are urging residents to check their immunisation status as the outbreak continues to grow.
Why now: The emergency declaration and its containment measures mark an unusually strong response to a fast-spreading vaccine-preventable disease.
