AfD struggles to form first state government after landmark win
Original: Germany's far-right AfD struggles to form first state government after landmark win
Germany's far-right Alternative for Germany is working to form its first state-level government following a landmark election win, but coalition-building is proving difficult. The party holds a strong result but lacks obvious partners, as mainstream parties have largely ruled out cooperating with it. Attention is on whether the AfD can translate its electoral gains into actual governing power at the state level.
Why now: An AfD-led state government would be unprecedented in postwar Germany and would reshape national politics.
