President Emmanuel Macron announced he watched the first firing of France's new M51.3 ballistic missile, launched from the nuclear-powered submarine Le Vigilant while he was aboard the frigate Auvergne. He noted that very few nations hold such expertise and congratulated the teams behind the test. The M51.3 is the latest upgrade of France's sea-based nuclear deterrent.

Why now: The French president personally attending and publicising a first nuclear missile test is a rare, high-profile demonstration of France's deterrent capability.
