Researchers have found that painting fake eyes on the rear ends of animals can trick predators into abandoning hunts, apparently by making them believe their prey is watching or facing them. The finding is drawing attention for its simple, unusual approach to predator deterrence and its possible implications for protecting livestock.
Why now: The surprising, counterintuitive finding that decoy eyespots can fool predators is sparking scientific and public interest.
