EU signs mutual defense pact for space security
Original: EU deepens collective space security with mutual defense pact
The European Union has moved to strengthen collective space security through a mutual defense pact, extending the principle of collective defense to assets and interests in orbit. The agreement signals that an attack on a member state's space infrastructure could trigger a joint response. It marks a significant deepening of EU cooperation in space as satellites become critical to communications, navigation and defense.
Why now: Growing concerns about threats to satellites and space infrastructure have pushed EU members to formalize collective space defense commitments.
