Francis Halzen has been awarded the 2026 Nobel Prize in Physics, according to the Nobel Prize announcement. Halzen is best known as the founder and driving force behind the IceCube Neutrino Observatory at the South Pole, the detector that opened up neutrino astronomy by tracing high-energy neutrinos to distant cosmic sources. The announcement has drawn attention in science and technology circles, with discussion focused on the recognition of his decades-long work on particle astrophysics.
Why now: The Nobel Prize in Physics announcement is a major annual event, and this year's honouring of Halzen recognises his landmark contributions to neutrino astronomy.
