Donald Trump has reportedly referred to Xi Jinping as his friend at every recorded meeting between the two leaders, yet the Chinese president has never done the same in return. Official transcripts released by China's state news agency Xinhua document the pattern, including the October summit in Busan where Trump called Xi his good friend, while Xi's remarks have consistently avoided any reciprocal warmth.

Why now: The asymmetry between the two leaders' public language highlights ongoing tension in US-China relations and fuels debate over Trump's personal approach to diplomacy with Beijing.
