A candidate from the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) has been elected speaker of a German regional parliament, the first time the party has held the post. The election of the AfD politician to a senior parliamentary office marks a political milestone for a party that mainstream German parties have long sought to contain, and it is drawing attention to the AfD's growing institutional strength at the state level.
Why now: It is the first time the AfD has won a presiding officer role in a German state parliament, a significant signal of the party's normalization and rise.
