Iran summons French ambassador over student protest crackdown
Original: Iran has summoned its French ambassador over the ongoing student protests accusing France of violating rights of protest
Iran has summoned France's ambassador in Tehran to protest the treatment of student demonstrators in France, accusing Paris of violating protesters' rights through police crackdowns. The move is seen as notable given Iran's own record of suppressing protests, and observers have pointed out the irony of Tehran positioning itself as a defender of demonstrators abroad.
Why now: The perceived hypocrisy of Iran, which has cracked down on its own protest movements, accusing France of violating protesters' rights is drawing attention.
