Original: U.S. military to conduct first firing squad execution since World War II
The U.S. military is set to carry out its first execution by firing squad since World War II, according to an NBC News report. The announcement is drawing attention to the rare and controversial method of capital punishment, which remains legal in only a handful of U.S. states and has not been used at the federal military level in roughly eight decades.
Why now: The resumption of a punishment method unused for nearly 80 years is a striking and controversial development in U.S. death penalty practice.
