Biodiversity study finds benefits keep rising with species richness

A new study examined 23 categories of ecosystem services and functions and found that most benefits continued to rise steadily as biodiversity increased, rather than leveling off once a few key species were present. The results challenge the idea of functional redundancy—the assumption that species can simply substitute for one another—suggesting that losing species may harm ecosystems more than previously thought.

Why now: New research challenges the assumption that a few species are enough to sustain ecosystem services, making it relevant to conservation debates.
