Washington Voters Advance Ballot Initiative Protecting Girls' Sports
Original: ‘You’re a Man’: Washington State Voters Put Initiative that Protects Girls’ Sports on Ballot
Supporters in Washington state have succeeded in getting an initiative onto the ballot that would protect girls' sports, reportedly framed around the exchange 'You're a Man.' The measure would restrict participation in girls' athletics, reflecting a broader national debate over transgender athletes in women's and girls' competitions. Advocates say it safeguards fairness for female athletes; critics argue it targets transgender youth.
Why now: The debate over transgender athletes in girls' sports is a live national political issue, and a citizens' initiative reaching the ballot is a significant development.
