Papua New Guinea is facing severe drought linked to a powerful El Niño, with water sources drying up, crops failing and food prices rising months before the worst agricultural impacts are forecast. The pattern, driven by unusually warm Pacific Ocean waters, is also expected to bring heavy rainfall and flooding once the dry phase ends, shifting from drought to deluge.
Why now: The strengthening El Niño is already causing food and water insecurity in Papua New Guinea, raising concerns about a worsening humanitarian crisis.
