Berkshire environmental group hunts for ghost dams
Original: Berkshire environmental group is on the hunt for ghost dams, and their search has nothing to do with Halloween
An environmental group in Berkshire, Massachusetts is searching for 'ghost dams' — abandoned or forgotten dam structures lingering in the region's waterways. The effort is aimed at identifying obsolete dams that no longer serve a purpose, typically so they can be removed to restore natural river flow and improve fish passage and water quality.
Why now: Dam removal and river restoration efforts are drawing attention as communities work to restore free-flowing waterways.
