NFL referees' union calls suspensions of two officials excessive

Original: NFL referees' union: Punishment for 2 suspended officials 'excessive, inconsistent' https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/766

The NFL Referees Association is publicly pushing back against the league's decision to suspend two game officials, describing the punishment as excessive and inconsistent with how similar cases have been handled. The dispute, reported by The Athletic, opens a new friction point between the league and the officials who work its games, raising questions about how discipline of referees is applied and whether standards are being evenly enforced across the officiating corps.

Why now: The union publicly challenging league discipline of officials is unusual and touches on ongoing debates about NFL officiating quality and accountability.
