Steve Hilton's 'Just try it' ad sparks backlash

Original: steve hilton ad

Republican California gubernatorial candidate Steve Hilton has released a campaign ad titled 'Just try it' that is drawing criticism from both sides. CalMatters reports the spot is designed to court liberal voters, but it has instead angered members of Hilton's own conservative base, who see the messaging as a betrayal of Republican principles.

Why now: The ad's attempt to appeal across party lines has triggered a visible backlash from his own supporters during the California governor's race.
