Massie bill would let small farmers process their own livestock
Original: Thomas Massie files bill to let small farmers process their own livestock
Kentucky Republican Representative Thomas Massie has filed legislation that would allow small farmers to process their own livestock, bypassing current federal inspection requirements that critics say favor large meatpacking plants. Supporters argue the change would help local farms sell meat directly to consumers, while opponents raise food safety concerns.
Why now: Interest in local food supply chains and frustration with meatpacking industry consolidation have made farm processing rules a live political issue.
