Death-row inmate Christa Pike survived two doses of a lethal injection drug during a botched execution in Tennessee last week and is now conscious and speaking, her lawyers said in a statement on Tuesday. Pike remains in critical condition as observers react with shock to the failed procedure, with many describing the episode as utter madness and renewing scrutiny of how US states carry out executions.
Why now: A botched execution that failed to kill the inmate is a shocking human rights story prompting renewed debate over lethal injection and the death penalty.
