Tennessee bishops urge end to death penalty as Trump approves firing squad execution
Original: Tennessee bishops call for end to death penalty; Trump approves military firing squad execution
Catholic bishops in Tennessee have called for an end to the death penalty in the state, while separately President Trump has approved a military execution by firing squad. The bishops' appeal adds religious opposition to capital punishment just as the federal government moves forward with an execution method rarely used in modern American history, drawing attention to the widening debate over the death penalty in the United States.
Why now: The rare combination of religious leaders opposing capital punishment and a president approving an uncommon execution method has put the death penalty back in the news.
