Soviet Totskoye Nuclear Exercise Exposed Soldiers to Radiation
Original: The Totskoye Nuclear Exercise Exposed Soldiers to Radiation to Prepare for a Potential Third World War
In 1954, the Soviet Union carried out the Totskoye nuclear exercise, in which thousands of soldiers were deliberately exposed to radiation from a live atomic bomb detonation as part of preparations for a potential third world war. Reports revisiting the exercise highlight how troops were stationed near the blast in the Orenburg region to study battlefield conditions after a nuclear strike, with many later suffering serious health consequences.
Why now: Renewed coverage of Cold War-era nuclear risks amid current global tensions has put this historical exercise back in the spotlight.
