Russia downplays plague lab worker death as dozens quarantined
Original: Russian gov't downplays plague lab worker death; dozens quarantined
A worker at a Russian laboratory died, reportedly from plague, and dozens of people have been placed in quarantine. The Russian government is downplaying the incident, offering little detail about the circumstances of the death or the scale of the quarantine. Observers question the official account and worry about potential public health risks.
Why now: Concerns over transparency and contagion risk after a plague-related death near a lab are drawing wide attention.
