Awa: GOP affiliation would give Hawaii leverage in Congress
Original: Awa on 'Spotlight Now': Republican affiliation would give Hawaii leverage in Congress
Hawaii's Awa appeared on Hawaii News Now's 'Spotlight Now' to argue that the state registering as Republican would give it greater leverage in Congress, where Republicans currently hold power. He suggested aligning with the majority party could bring Hawaii more influence and federal benefits than its reliably Democratic leaning currently delivers. The remarks touch on longstanding debate over whether Hawaii's one-party dominance limits its clout in Washington.
Why now: A local politician publicly floated a provocative idea about switching party affiliation for political gain, sparking debate.
