Hyogo Prefecture's stork park has announced that the wild oriental stork population in Toyooka could exceed 1,000 birds within two years, as ongoing release programs continue to expand the species. Reactions include questions about how long releases should continue and whether officials have set a target population size. Once extinct in the wild in Japan, storks have been reintroduced through decades of breeding and release efforts.
Why now: The projection that the wild stork population could surpass 1,000 birds raises debate about when the reintroduction program should wind down.
