Kemi Badenoch declared that the Conservatives will 'battle for the soul of the nation' in a tax-cutting speech in Birmingham, invoking Margaret Thatcher as she sets out her party's direction. The address signals a low-tax, ideological pitch as she seeks to define Tory opposition to the Labour government.

Why now: Her Thatcher-evoking rhetoric and tax-cutting message mark a notable moment in the Conservative Party's efforts to redefine itself in opposition.
