Pacific nations push to entrench 1.5C goal at COP
Original: Pacific nations seek to entrench 1.5-degree target in COP climate talks
Pacific island nations are pressing for the 1.5-degree Celsius warming limit to be firmly entrenched in negotiations at the COP climate summit. The group, among the countries most exposed to rising seas and extreme weather, wants the target locked into formal summit outcomes. The demand puts low-lying states against larger emitters resisting stronger mitigation commitments as talks continue.
Why now: Ongoing COP negotiations have made the fate of the 1.5-degree target a central sticking point, with vulnerable nations leading the push.
