Children sought to rear harvest mice for Devon release
Original: Wanted: children to rear harvest mice at home for wild release in Devon
A project in Devon is asking children to rear harvest mice at home before releasing them into the wild, in an effort to boost populations of the small, threatened rodents. The scheme invites families to hand-rear litters under guidance, combining conservation with hands-on wildlife education. Conservationists say such reintroduction efforts can help restore the species to areas where it has declined.
Why now: Unusual conservation recruitment of children is drawing attention to declining harvest mouse populations.
