Brazil's Hugo Calderano has become the first men's table tennis player from outside China to reach world No. 1, ending a long-running Chinese stranglehold on the top ranking. Fans and pundits are debating whether he can hold the spot, with several Chinese players close behind and the battle for first place expected to stay tight through upcoming tour events.

Why now: A non-Chinese player topping the men's world ranking is a historic first that shakes up expectations in the sport.
