Kosovo lawmakers elect new president in late-night vote
Original: Kosovo lawmakers elect a new president in a late-night vote to avert snap election
Kosovo's parliament has elected a new president during a late-night session, a move that allows the country to avoid holding a snap election. The vote came after weeks of political deadlock in Pristina over the presidency, an office that rotates among ethnic groups under the constitution. The agreement steadies the government for now, though observers are watching whether the coalition holds.
Why now: The late-night vote resolved a political standoff that had threatened to force Kosovo into an early election
