Original: A Scottish Hip-Hop Hoax Helped James McAvoy Find His Movie-Making Voice
James McAvoy has made his move behind the camera with a film drawing on the true story of two Scottish rappers who pretended to be American to break into hip-hop. Coverage of the actor's directing debut is drawing attention to the bizarre real-life hoax that inspired it, and to McAvoy's shift from star to film-maker.
Why now: McAvoy's debut as a director, based on a stranger-than-fiction Scottish hip-hop scam, is newly in the news.
