85th anniversary of Babi Yar massacre marked amid war
Original: 85th anniversary of Babi Yar killings marked in shadow of Russia-Ukraine war
Commemorations are being held marking the 85th anniversary of the Babi Yar massacres, in which Nazi forces killed tens of thousands of Jews near Kyiv in 1941. This year's observances take place as Russia's war against Ukraine continues, giving the memorial events added weight and drawing attention to questions of memory, occupation and violence in the very region where the killings occurred.
Why now: The anniversary coincides with the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war, making the commemoration especially resonant and newsworthy.
