Original: Rahul Gandhi, Indian opposition lawmakers detained over election chief protest for second day
Rahul Gandhi and other Indian opposition lawmakers were detained for a second consecutive day while protesting over the appointment of the country's election chief. The detentions mark an escalation in the standoff between opposition parties and the government over the selection process for the Election Commission, which the opposition says sidelines parliament and undermines the body's independence ahead of future polls.
Why now: The repeated detention of a prominent opposition leader highlights ongoing political tension in India over electoral institution reforms.
