Santiago Cañizares says footballers' salaries are not what people think

Original: santiago cañizares

Former Valencia and Spain goalkeeper Santiago Cañizares has sparked debate in Spain by pushing back on the idea that footballers are the only athletes who earn big money. He said that in Spain's top flight, starting salaries are typically around one million euros gross, and revealed that at 22 he had to rescue the family home from an auction, arguing players' finances are more fragile than assumed.

Why now: His remarks come amid ongoing public debate in Spain about footballers' wages compared with other sports and ordinary workers.
