Hikers in the southern Harz mountains of Germany are sharing photographs of bark beetle damage on the Stöberhai, framing the dead and infested trees as a 'buffet' for the pest. The images show the ongoing beetle infestation scarring a popular walking area, and are being circulated among nature and hiking photography communities.
Why now: Bark beetle infestation remains a visible and emotive issue in the Harz forests that hikers pass through.
