Europe's Citizen Assemblies: Success or Anticlimax?
Original: Europe’s Tide of Citizen Assemblies: Unsung Success or Anticlimax?
Citizen assemblies, in which randomly selected members of the public deliberate on policy questions, are spreading across Europe, and the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace asks whether they have been an unsung success or an anticlimax. The debate centres on whether these panels produce meaningful influence on decision-making or remain symbolic exercises, as more European governments and institutions experiment with the format.
Why now: Growing use of citizen assemblies in European policy-making has renewed debate over whether they genuinely shape decisions.
