Chechen human rights defender Zainap Gashaeva has paid tribute to her late friend Anna Politkovskaya, the investigative journalist murdered in Moscow in 2006, describing her as 'on the side of the victims'. In remarks carried by Novaya Gazeta Evropa, Gashaeva recalled their shared work documenting abuses during the Chechen wars and the struggle they fought together.

Why now: The tribute has renewed attention on Politkovskaya's legacy and the dangers facing those who document human rights abuses in Russia and Chechnya.
