Mamdani calls Gaza war genocide on first Oct. 7 anniversary as mayor
Original: Mamdani marks first Oct. 7 anniversary as mayor with statement blasting Israel's war in Gaza as genocide
New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani marked the first anniversary of the October 7 attacks since taking office with a statement accusing Israel of committing genocide in Gaza. The remark puts him at odds with many mainstream political figures and is drawing sharp reaction from both supporters and critics of Israel.
Why now: A sitting US mayor using the word genocide about Israel's war is a politically explosive break from mainstream rhetoric.
