Dengue outbreak raises concern over wet El Niño winter
Original: Amid dengue outbreak, mosquito control experts are wary of a wet winter fueled by El Niño
Mosquito control experts are warning that a wet winter driven by El Niño could extend the season for the insects that spread dengue, which is currently experiencing an outbreak in Florida. Typically cold weather suppresses mosquito populations, but warmer, rainier conditions may allow the disease-carrying insects to remain active longer, heightening concern among public health and vector control officials.
Why now: An ongoing dengue outbreak combined with forecasts of a wet El Niño winter has raised fears of continued mosquito-borne disease transmission.
