Portland's Sacred Heart Church to hold final mass in October

Original: Sacred Heart Church in Portland to hold its final mass in late October

Sacred Heart Church in Portland, Maine will celebrate its final mass in late October, marking the end of the parish's operations. The closure adds to the wave of church consolidations and shutdowns affecting Catholic dioceses across the United States, driven largely by declining attendance, fewer priests and rising maintenance costs for aging buildings.

Why now: Local parish closures are drawing attention as Catholic churches across the country shut down or merge amid declining congregations.
