ICANN Reveals 2026 Applications for New Generic Top-Level Domains

Original: ICANN Reveals 2026 Round Applications for New Generic Top-Level Domains

ICANN has announced the applications received for its 2026 round of new generic top-level domains, the system that controls internet domain endings like .com and .org. The new application round would allow organisations to apply to operate their own domain extensions, the first such round in over a decade. Tech communities are discussing which applicants are seeking new domains and what the expansion could mean for the web's naming system.

Why now: The 2026 round is the first major expansion of internet domain extensions in years, drawing attention to who is applying and how it may reshape the web.
