El-Sayed launches bid for Michigan Senate seat
Original: El-Sayed's Michigan Senate race
Abdul El-Sayed, the former Wayne County health director and 2018 Michigan gubernatorial candidate, is running for the US Senate seat being vacated by Gary Peters. The progressive Democrat, endorsed previously by Bernie Sanders, is drawing attention as a test of the party's left wing in a key swing state, with talk focused on his chances in both the primary and a general election.
Why now: El-Sayed's entry into the open Michigan Senate race is seen as an early and consequential contest for the direction of the Democratic Party ahead of the midterms.
