US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth addressed sailors aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln, acknowledging that their recent deployment 'wasn't easy'. The carrier's tour drew controversy, and Hegseth's remarks are being read as an attempt to recognise the strain on the crew while defending the mission. Reaction has focused on what the extended deployment meant for the sailors and their families.
Why now: The carrier's deployment was controversial, and the defence secretary's unusually candid remarks to the crew are drawing attention.
