Italy Looks North: Science Anchors Rome's Arctic Strategy
Original: Italy looks North: Science anchors Rome’s Arctic strategy
Italy is shaping an Arctic strategy that puts scientific research at its centre, according to reporting by Decode39. As melting ice opens new shipping routes and resource questions, Rome is positioning itself as an observer nation with credibility built on polar science rather than territorial claims. The approach ties Italy's research presence in Svalbard and cooperation with Arctic states to broader geopolitical and energy interests.
Why now: Growing strategic and commercial interest in the Arctic as climate change opens the region is prompting countries like Italy to define their polar policies.
