Reports say one of the last remaining American chestnut groves in the United States is set to be destroyed to make way for a data center. The American chestnut was nearly wiped out by blight in the 20th century, so surviving groves are seen as precious for conservation and restoration efforts. Commenters are criticizing the trade-off between expanding digital infrastructure and protecting rare, irreplaceable natural habitats.
Why now: People are reacting to the conflict between booming data center construction and the protection of a rare surviving tree species.
