Authorities have arrested protesters and cut down a roughly 250-year-old cottonwood tree, known as the grandmother cottonwood, in Lochiel, Arizona, to make way for border wall construction. Activists had occupied the site to protect the tree for more than 70 days. Critics on social media are calling the arrests and felling an act of state violence and ecocide.
