Original: FBI says it thwarted terrorist attack in Minnesota by an 18-year-old it supplied with an AK-47
The FBI says it stopped a planned terrorist attack in Minnesota by arresting an 18-year-old who allegedly plotted to carry out an assault. In an undercover operation, agents themselves supplied the suspect with an AK-47 before making the arrest. Coverage by outlets including The Guardian highlights the case, and the unusual detail that the FBI provided the weapon has drawn particular attention.
Why now: The FBI's revelation that its own agents supplied the rifle used in the sting has sparked debate over how such counterterrorism operations are run.
