Rubio invokes history in Greece to pitch Trump's America first
Original: Rubio in Greece digs into past to tout Trump’s ‘America first’ approach https://www. theguardian.com/us-news/2026/o ct/0
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, visiting Greece, used references to the country's ancient past to argue that Donald Trump's 'America first' foreign policy serves allies better than traditional approaches. The speech touched on themes of sovereignty and shared Western heritage, drawing attention across European and US media as Washington's diplomatic posture toward Nato partners continues to draw scrutiny.
Why now: Rubio's remarks in Greece are being read as a signal of how the Trump administration frames its relationship with European allies.
