California governor convenes AI panel on 'kill switch'

Original: California governor convenes AI panel to ponder 'kill switch'

California's governor has convened a panel of experts to consider artificial intelligence policy, including the idea of a 'kill switch' that could shut down advanced AI systems. The move puts the state, home to much of the US tech industry, at the centre of the debate over how to regulate powerful AI and guard against potential risks.

Why now: Growing public and political concern over AI safety is driving interest in how California may regulate the technology.
